Lord Stanley Hotel heritage retained ahead of Olympic makeover
AHS worked with the owners of the iconic Lord Stanley Hotel in East Brisbane, ahead of a $15 million makeover due to be completed ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
The AHS team prepared a Heritage Impact Statement (HIS) for the iconic Brisbane watering hole, which was established all the way back in 1889-90. While the well-known pub has stood the test of time, it will soon be reborn – better than ever.
AHS has also assisted with management measures throughout the project, which were conditional as part of the development approval (DA). Some of these management measures include archival recording, ongoing heritage advice around the protection of significant fabric, awareness training for work crews, and general monitoring/supervision of certain areas of work.
When working on this project, some fascinating sections of the old hotel were revealed during demolition including an original brick fireplace hidden behind a wall – dating back to its original construction in the 1890s!
The Lord Stanley Hotel was purchased by the Hakfoort Group in 2022, before closing the doors in May to begin refurbishment works. The overhaul includes a new beer garden capable of seating 200 patrons, three additional outdoor entertainment areas including a playground, and an overhauled restaurant and bar.
In a nod to its original design, the refurbished hotel will feature red brick construction that honours the aesthetic that put it on the map. It is set to open in early 2025 and we can’t wait!
