Meet Abbi Weldon – AHS Heritage Consultant
Abbi began a work experience program at AHS while completing her archaeology degree. She left such a strong impression that AHS offered her a continuing consultant role upon her graduation. Now Abbi takes on her own projects, including field programs, while also providing valuable support to the AHS team.
After completing her Bachelor of Arts (Archaeology), Abbi moved on to her next academic pursuit – completing a Master of Arts (Archaeology) at the University of New England, with a focus on the forensic side of archaeology.
With experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cultural heritage inspections, artefact handling, and archaeological field methods, Abbi brings a wealth of knowledge to our team.
We caught up with Abbi to find out more about her studies, what she loves about her role at AHS, and what inspired her to pursue archaeology in the first place.
What inspired you to pursue a career in archaeology?
In high school I studied both ancient and modern history, where I began reading fascinating literature and conducting research on various archaeological topics. This ultimately sparked my interest in the discipline.
It sounds like your experience in high school inspired a lifelong interest in archaeology! Could you tell us a little more about your Master of Arts and what you will be specialising in?
Through my master’s program, I am undertaking a project that involves researching international burial sites and how their typologies correlate with larger forensic questions. Hopefully, this will lead me to further studies that continue to focus on forensic research.
Outside of the classroom, what is your favourite part about working at AHS?
My favourite part of the job is definitely the variety. Every day presents a new opportunity or skill to develop.
If you weren’t pursuing a career in archaeology, what would be your ‘Plan B’?
If I were to ever pursue another career, I probably would have become a detective. I think my love of shows like Law & Order, NCIS, or CSI made it hard for me to choose between being a police officer or an archaeologist.
Fascinating! Now for a bit of fun – what is the reaction you receive when you tell people you work within and study archaeology?
If I had a dollar for every time someone found out I studied or worked in archaeology and then made a reference to Indiana Jones, I’d be a millionaire by now.
Thank you for your time, Abbi!
