Mulgrave Gallery opens as part of Cairns Festival

The latest addition to the Cairns Gallery Precinct, Mulgrave Gallery, is now open! The exciting new gallery features a First Nations-focused program, which aims to promote the region’s growing art scene.

AHS supported the project and facilitated the necessary heritage approvals alongside TPG Architects, ahead of restoration and refurbishment works for the State heritage-listed Mulgrave Shire Council Chamber on the Cairns Esplanade. Refurbishment works were expertly undertaken by La Spina Construction.

Mulgrave Gallery forms part of a wider $24.3 million project centred around the refurbishment of the former Mulgrave Shire Council offices, and is the latest addition to the Cairns Gallery Precinct; a significant stage that progresses the city’s goal of becoming the arts and culture capital of northern Australia.

“We have a long working relationship with the Cairns Regional Council at AHS, so we are thrilled to see this project come to life.”

“The Cairns Gallery Precinct elevates the region and will no doubt inspire so many talented North Queensland artists who now have an entire precinct dedicated to their passion. We are excited to see the positive effect the precinct has on tourism, too.”

The new gallery features more than 255 square metres of exhibition space, including one large display area, two smaller rooms and two original vault rooms being used as mini galleries, making five unique exhibition spaces.

“The official opening of Mulgrave Gallery is an important addition to Cairns’ cultural landscape,” Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Amy Eden said at the opening.

“This dynamic fusion of heritage and modernity will not only elevate the local art scene but also position Cairns as a premier destination for cultural tourism in northern Australia.

“With the arts sector employing around 1,000 people, the new gallery will provide further economic benefits to the city.

“The arts sector already contributes more than $125 million (directly and indirectly) to Cairns city’s economy and is a growing driver for tourism in Australia.”

The first exhibition in the new Mulgrave Gallery, ‘(re)connection: Culture, Country and People’ will run until Saturday 11 January 2025, and AHS was lucky to have been invited to the opening for an up-close tour.
